The rooted man from Kranachberg.
For Hannes Sabathi, the most important thing is to make authentic wines that reflect their relationship to the soil, wines that can have edges and corners and, with these, show even more personality.
Presently, he cultivates 13 hectares of vineyards, which are planted at the sites of Kranachberg and Jägerberg with the varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Welschriesling, Scheurebe and Gelber Muskateller.
The warm and humid climate of Southern Styria, influenced by the Mediterranean sea, allows for a long vegetation period. But there are cool nights as well, and these promote the development of rich aromas that convey the grapes, especially the Sauvignon Blanc variety, an abundance of nuance and noblesse.
The basin-shaped Kranachberg, with its south-southwest exposition, is situated at approximately 500 meters above sea level. The soil here consists of permeable pebbly sand and gives the wines a fresh and salty minerality like nothing else. Wines from this site are always characterized by an elegant, clearly focused structure.
The Jägerberg is a south-facing site at approximately 350 meters above sea level. And thanks to the sandy and loamy structure of the chalky-based soils, it is ideal for Burgundian grape varieties. Grauburgunder, Morillon (Chardonnay) and Weißburgunder are thriving here and tend to develop a warm, floral fruityness and a tightly structured, minerally driven palate.
In 2013 Hannes Sabathi was incorporated into the renowned producer’s association “Steirische Klassik Weingüter” (STK). Since 2018 the winery is certified sustainable.
