Tom Straka
Tom Straka, Rechnitz & Welschriesling = the perfect match.
Rechnitz, the home of the family run Straka winery, is a unique location: is lies at the southern foothills of the „Günser Gebirge“ mountain range which seperates the mid from the southern part of Burgenland and which also marks the transition from the alpine regions to the Pannonian lowlands. The soils consist of crystalline schist and magmatic rock and you would not be surprised that they lend a very special character to the grapes grown on them.
Thomas Straka is an open minded, critical guy with a spleen of his own. It’s Welschriesling, this old central European and thus Austrian grape, which has been mistreated and misunderstood by many but which can deliver outstanding and truly individual wines – when treated with respect based on knowledge – and passion! This late ripening variety wonderfully reflects its terroir, boasts fantastic acidity and minerality. Thomas shows its true colours and in many shades: from entry level, light-footed to single vineyard and old vines, Welschriesling by Straka has it all!
Whites such as Pinot Blanc or Veltliner and in avantgarde styles (low-interventon blends, amphorae, skin maceration) as well as enticing, structure driven Blaufränkisch reds from green schist soils give proof of Straka’s versatility – and love for his unique homeland.
